Barca players on target for Spain

Roger Bogunyà

Spain ran out worthy winners of the South African World Cup and they did it thanks to strikes from Barca players, with Villa (5), Iniesta (2) and Puyol scoring all the team’s goals.

This was Barca’s World Cup, with eight of the 23 man Spanish squad and seven of the starters in the final from the club and all the goals coming from Barca players.

Villa joint top scorer

villa_celebracion_1.jpgSummer signing David Villa, who ended the competition as leading scorer alongside Muller, Sneijder and Forlán on five goals, scored the winners in the last sixteen against Portugal and the quarter finals against Paraguay, whilst also bagging a couple in the group games against Honduras and Chile to give the Nou Camp fans a taste of what they can expect next season.

Puyol goal seals Final place

golPUYOL_alemania.jpgSpain were hardly prolific in front of goal and in every game of the tournament they reached half time with the score at 0-0. In the semis against Germany, despite dominating possession and playing some great football, the team needed a Puyol goal from a corner - identical to the one scored in the 2-6 win at the Bernabeu –to seal their place in the Final.

Iniesta

Andrés Iniesta was the most decisive of the Barca goalscorers, following up his winning goal against Chile with his historic strike against Holland to give Spain the title and confirm that this World Cup has been Spain’s and also Barca’s!
